Children & Students Sometimes, we make the water dirty by letting soap and other harmful things go from our houses to the rivers and streams through something called stormwater. Stormwater is the water that goes down the storm drains that you see in the street outside your home. Click on one of the links below to learn more about stormwater and how you can help. City of Oceanside, California kid page for pollution awareness uses full-color animation and kid-friendly definitions to educate children about stormwater. EPA’s Office of Water coloring sheet addressing non-point sources using a "What’s Wrong with this Page" sheet. EPA’s Polluted Runoff Kids Page contains puzzles, activities, word finds, and further links regarding drinking water and ground water. Ohio EPA’s Pollution Prevention download is a 13-page coloring book full of coloring pages and assorted activities. Ohio EPA’s Pollution Prevention page contains a complete listing of child-friendly links appropriate for all ages, especially K-8. Additional Resources for Students Teachers Below are links to information about educational workshops, sample lesson plans, learning guides, and other links to educational materials to help you get started. You will find that students enjoy learning about local water quality issues, and the educational materials listed below are accessible to a variety of student ages. Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment contains teacher resources including sample lesson plans for instructing on urban stormwater issues (Grades 6-12). EPA’s Pollution Prevention Toolbox contains a series of four page lesson plans on various pollution prevention concepts for schools. Included fact sheets also include activity ideas. EPA’s Waste and Recycling Curriculum Resources page includes a comprehensive listing of websites offering everything from learning guides to activity ideas. International Erosion Control Association (IECA) is the world’s oldest and largest association devoted entirely to helping solve the problems caused by erosion and its byproduct—sediment. This site offers technical details specifications on stormwater management and is geared toward a more experienced audience. Ohio EPA’s Teacher’s Kit page contains ideas on organizing local field trips, arranging a visiting speaker, becoming community participants, and other resources.
